But not everything is dark and gloomy…

Make no mistake about it, I am still hopeful that the Philippines will make it out of the rut it is in now. Despite the clowns and thieves in government and in society, there remain some people — exemplars of virtue — who still make me proud to be Filipino.

Who are these people? I may not remember all their names or faces, but I do remember, and will always remember, what they did and are continuing to do for themselves, for their families and for their country.

  • The athletes and artists who, despite overwhelming odds, still manage to show the world that, indeed, the Filipino can…
  • The taxi/tricycle/trisikad driver or the janitor/janitress who, despite his/her dire need for money and the opportunity provided them by fate, still returned the bag full of money that he/she found to its rightful owners. Amazing! If only some government officials and businessmen were half as honest…
  • Our very prolific Filipino Inventors who never cease to amaze with their creativity, ingenuity, and practicality…
  • The Nurses, Seamen, Domestic Helpers, Teachers, Engineers, Entertainers and other brave souls who willingly face discrimination, abuse, and sometimes even death abroad just so their families back home can have a chance at a better future…
  • The people who remain in the country, by choice or otherwise, and try to make the best of each God-given day. The working mothers, the small entrepreneurs, ordinary employees… doing good, trying to keep honest as best they can, treating other people fairly, working, surviving, dreaming, loving, believing that the Philippines and the Filipinos deserve better and are doing something about it…

Mabuhay pa din ang Pilipinas.

But not everything is dark and gloomy…
